Mix Monday: Diyqee - DQ Tape X

The most exciting thing in the world for me is finding a new artist. Even if everyone already knows about them and I'm years behind, I still act like a giddy school girl. (My friends probably consider me a music hoarder, but I'm okay with that.) Today, Mix Monday led me to Diyqee. I wish I had more to work with, but all I got from the internet is that Diyqee's a 20-year-old dj/producer from Paris, France. I dig his style. This mix has all the right grooves. Head over to Diyqee's Facebook page to snag the links to download the tracks from all of his DQ Tapes from this year. Well, I guess we're done here. Alors dansez.

Merry Christmas to all and to all a goodnight!

Hopefully everyone is enjoying the holiday season with friends, family, strangers, aliens, or whomever you're spending it with. I got to head back home to South Jersey for a few days. Getting away from the college lifestyle for a little is very refreshing. Unfortunately, that means no radio show tonight. I'll leave you with this wonderful Christmas episode of Drunk History.

If you haven't heard about these, check them out. They're great! What's better than getting your friend wasted, having him recount fairly accurate historical events, taping it, and then getting famous people to act it out? Well actually, this scenario would probably be better if everyone involved was wasted, but whatever. Watch the video, eat lots of food, and be merry. Happy holidays to everyone!

Perseus - Russian Girlfriends EP

Everything about this EP makes me happy. The Magician's been sending Perseus much love in his magic tapes, and I've been trying to get my hands on these tracks. Apparently, there's some epic tale that explains everything. I was going to write about Perseus, but what's on Soundcloud is so much more amazing than anything I could write. So download this freebie, sit back, relax, listen to this EP, and enjoy the tale of Perseus:
This is the tale of young Perseus. Just a few moons ago, Perseus opened The Magician's Magic Tape 12 with his retouch of "New Life." After noticing the people's desire for 112bpm tropical flavors, The Magician descended upon the lands of Mycenae and challenged Perseus to undertake a quest only fit for demigods. The Kraken? Medusa? No -- that's ancient history. The undertaking was fairly simple: if Perseus could craft 3 magical originals, he would share them with the masses. And so it happened, Magic Tape 15 was met with "Russian Girlfriends," followed by "Cool Runnings" in tape 17, and finally "Running Back To You" in tape 18.
The people prayed, day after day, asking for Perseus to unlock his music and share it with them. And so it was, through the help of his "fly" stallion, Pegasus (or in alternative universes, "The French Express"), they heroically unchained the EP, for the masses to fully consume & enjoy.

Mix Monday: Villa - 'in the mix' Best of 2011

The year is almost over, and it was another great year for music. I'm still putting the finishing touches on my top albums of the year. A lot of djs are putting together these great end of the year mixes. They're like VIP status mixes -- the best of the best. Villa's best of list caught my ear the other day. I'm pretty sure they put everything into this one.

PB&J Funk Compilation

Rawr. So, I didn't make this week's show. I realized that it would have been the last show of 2011. Christmas and New Years Eve both fall on Sunday, go figure. I'll have to think of something extra special to make up for it. Since there's no playlist this week, I'll leave you with this awesome compilation from PB&J (Peanut Butter and Jams) a newer label based in Orlando, Florida. It's a free download on Soundcloud, my favorites. I've been rocking this on the iPod all week. Enjoy!

Aeroc - R+B=?

How appropriate -- Ghostly artist Aeroc (Geoff White) released a new album R+B=? today. It's the perfect musical ambiance as I sit on my couch "studying for finals" next to my lit Christmas tree. The blending of minimal techno and acoustic guitar is genius. Maybe some of that genius will rub off. You can stream the entire album on Soundclound. Plus, you get a nice little bonus download. Score!

Mix Monday: Shindu - Mixtape for Electro Boogie Encounter

Shindu found a spot in my heart after first hearing their version "Happy House" released on Kitsuné earlier this year.

Shindu - Happy House by Shindu

I'm so glad Shindu put together this mix for Electro Boogie Encounter! It furthers my love of all things Belgian. These are some great tracks! Goldroom's remix of Niki & The Dove makes a much welcomed appearance, along with a great Edwin Van Cleef remix to feed my recent obsession. I'll put some cherishable moments and the tracklist after the jump. This one's getting burned for keeping in the car. Enjoy the beats, and check out the full interview on Electro Boogie Encounter (sending some traffic love).

Mix Monday: Edwin Van Cleef - November Mix

Yes, November is over, but that doesn't change how awesome this mix is. British dj/producer Edwin Van Cleef is one of my favorites right now. He's got a great smooth disco vibe going on. Luckily, he's touring North America between December 8-17th. Woo!

This Is a Song About Vegetables!

No words necessary here, just downloading, playing, and repeating. Oh, and vegetables! Thanks goes to Brazilian producer Kamei for this, it's brilliant! (And it's a free download on the soundclounds. Yay!)

James Brown's Got You Too

Today I woke up feeling extra awesome. Not that anyone reading this will necessarily care, but you know how people always talk about people having theme songs or a soundtrack to everyday life? Well, that's the part about today worth sharing with the internet. Spread the good vibes.

Mix Monday: Moonlight Matters - 10 Days Off 2011 Mixtape

This isn't a new mix by Moonlight Matters, half of the Belgian duo Villa, but it popped up on my dashboard today. First off, I love the starting point. It also has some of my favorites tracks.  The rain in the area today sucked, but the energy off this surely made everything better. I hope that it does the same for you.

Daniel Lee Kendall - 'Lost in the Moment'

Finding good music always gives you a great feeling. Every holiday season, Zales gets the perfect songs for its commercials. Maybe it's something about the holiday season that puts in me in a cutesy, curl-up-by-the-fire mood, but I always find myself tracking these songs down. Thank god for the internet. I'm not sure there'd be an easy way to go about the process otherwise.

Daniel Lee Kendall made his debut last year with this track. It's a lot more folk-based in comparison to what I normally post about, but I love how cute this song is! The lyrics and melody are really simple, which make the song easier to love. Also, the syncopation in the "I think I'm fa-all-in," is brilliant.

Mix Monday: L'Étranger - Vier (You Need It! Mixtape)

British dj/producer Ben Thomas, as L'Étranger, mixed this up for the fourth installment of a mix series for You Need It! This mix has a great range of tracks. The tracklisting is after the jump. I was really happy to hear Stardust, Ed Rec, and Toro y Moi on this, but even more exciting was hearing Earth Wind & Fire, and MJ. Very nice! Thomas is another young dj, only 19 years old, and he's been doing it for several years.

Mix Monday: Maelstrom - BNR Introduction Mix

Joan Mael Péneau is a dj/producer from France who's been making beats for 10 years. For the past seven years, he's been working under the name Maelstrom. I've been on a huge disco kick, but the combination of aggressive electro, deep house, and lush synths makes this a killer mix. His upcoming Tanger EP will debut on the new Boys Noize digital sublabel, BNR TRAX, just in time for American Thanksgiving. I don't think my family will enjoy Maelstrom as the feasting music. I'll have to remember headphones.

Mix Monday: The Magician - Magic Tape #16

I know I've been neglecting Mix Monday the past couple of weeks, but my schedule got a little crazy. Anyway, the music never stops!

The Magician released his latest mix last week, Magic Tape #16. I’m so glad the music world comes up with tracklistings for these mixes, because that’s my only complaint. There's always an amazing selection of tracks, but I’m that person that always needs to know the title of the awesome song playing so it won’t plague my thoughts. But I can respect the mystery. Knowing what all the songs will be on a mix does take away a bit of the wow factor when you actually listen to it. Check out the mix below.

Playlist: "Eclecticism" 10/30/2011

Happy Halloween! In honor of the holiday, I did a nice little spooky themed show. About half way through making it the playlist today, I decided to go about it as though I were making a soundtrack to my own hypothetical zombie movie. There's all the background story, the part where the zombies come to life unbeknownst to the town, then the zombies destroy town, and then the main characters start killing off the zombies without any trouble until someone gets hurt and dies. That happens around The Hundred in the Hands, and then the main characters take revenge and drive away to Grum after the zombie apocalypse. Enjoy the playlist!

Mix Monday: U-Tern - Drive: One Day Later Radio 76 (Oct0911)

Since my Monday schedule leaves me posting mixes just before I go to bed, I find this mix quite appropriate for my current mood and state of mind. I like the way this mix starts out and launches into a frenzy of laid back house beats. Journeys are fun, especially when they involve music.

Canadian dj/producer U-Tern brings us this week's mix. You might know him as one half of Oliver, who have been putting out some fantastic remixes recently. This mix is U-Tern's latest installment from his One Day Later Radio podcast.

Mix Monday: Jerry Bouthier - Paris Fashion Week SS'12 Mixtape

Jerry Bouthier put together this wonderful mixtape for Kitsuné's blog Le Journal. It's got some great tracks and remixes, some of which I've played on the show. Bouthier pulled together his favorite tracks of the moment. His aim was to create a warm and loving dance mix that makes you want to be with loved ones. Maybe dance a little with your loved ones. Coincidentally, some of these tracks are some of my recent favorites, but there were some great surprises. This one was so good, I had to burn a copy for some lovin' in the car.

Mix Monday: Christian Strobe - DJ Promo Mix 02

I forget when I first came across German dj/producer Christian Strobe, but I do remember the song that first caught my ears. "Midnight Call" is deep, hypnotic house track with some seriously intoxicating beats.

Christian Strobe's mix is the real focus of this post. The song selection for this mix is what got me. It's got some of my favorites by Russ Chimes, Digitalism, Grum, and Boys Noize, but it's also got some hidden gems. I found myself stopping this mix quite a few times. Check out the mix below and after the jump, I'll share my stopping points.

Mix Monday: Shiny Disco Club - Millenium Disco

Shiny Disco Club is a French label that started a little over a year ago. This isn't a new mix, but I've been listening to it a lot lately. Not only are these tracks some of the best of the French touch genre I've heard, but they're all freebies for download. I've played a couple tracks on the show. Check out the other downloads on their Soundcloud and disco jive all the way to sleep tonight.

Mix Monday: SBTRKT - Xfm mix

British dj/producer SBTRKT is huge right now. I'm completely in love with his sound. I find that it's the perfect blend of hip-hop, R&B, house, and chillwave complete with that tribal flair. SBTRKT's got some great energy here. The fact that there's a Gold Panda track in there deserves bonus points in my book. This mix was done for a new show on Xfm, a UK radio station. Enjoy!

Before we get down to business, I just wanted to wish all the best to everyone who lost anyone on 9-11 [insert moment of silence]. I can't believe it's been 10 years. Everyone always says, "It seems like just yesterday," but it really does seem like it was just yesterday.

On a happier note, the beat doesn't stop. It simply keeps on coming. Hopefully tonight's show lightened up today's overall mood. The weather locally was a bit dreary, but these tracks are anything but dreary. Enjoy the list!

Mix Monday: Xinobi - Finally a New Mixtape

Happy Labor Day! If that actually means anything anymore. My roommates and I had a small barbecue, and the grocery store was staying open until 10pm. That's crazy in my opinion. Luckily, I did have the day off, but it didn't seem much different from most other days off. Summer only ended a week ago. Anyway, today is Mix Monday, and Portuguese dj/producer Xinobi has a new mix out. This mix is full of disco grooves and funky house beats. Since it's Labor Day, I'll let the music do all the work and speak for itself. Enjoy!

Mix Monday: Heathered Pearls - Hints of Musk

I hadn't heard of Heathered Pearls until this mix that Ghostly International posted today on Soundcloud. I'm a huge fan of that label and also of slow disco. Heathered Pearls is Jakub Alexander, who wears a few other hats. He's the co-founder of the Michigan's Moongadget Records, a dj by the name of Aarnio, and the music/culture contributor for the blog ISO50 (owned by Ghostly's Tycho).

Oh Irene

Hurricane Irene passed through town last night and brought quite a bit of water. So much so that the Raritan River spilling over onto the highways and roads. Luckily the aftermath wasn't too bad, but there was no way I was capable of getting to the studio today for the show. The school recommended we stay at home, and they never suggest that. I figured it was a good idea to listen. Although, it was a pretty cool sight to see. Pics to follow. I'll be around next week! Stay safe!

Mix Monday: Edwin van Cleef - August Mix 2011

Thanks goes to my fellow radio djs Sarah and Ryan for taking over the airwaves for me this week. I'm in Virginia Beach with the family for a few days, and couldn't make the show. I wasn't sure if vacation would give me time for the internet at all.  Luckily, there's free wi-fi in the lobby where they freeze you to death with air conditioning. I guess they don't want to encourage internet usage while you're on vacation. I can't argue with that logic.

Leave it to British dj/producer Edwin van Cleef to put out the perfect mix for me to end my day with. The weather here was beautiful and the cool ocean breeze topped it all off nicely. This mix has just enough disco energy to kick off the party of my dreams... literally. It's been a long day, so I'm off to Edwin van Cleef-land. See you soon.

Mix Monday: Mickey - August Mixtape

Dj/producer Mickey released his August mixtape a few days ago. This guy puts together some sweet nu-disco! I thought I posted something about Mickey a while back, but I apparently never got around to it. Fail. Mickey is also a resident dj of Libertine Supersport in Brussels. I wish I lived in Belgium, or at least nearby. He's played with fellow Belgian's such as Villa, Aeroplane, and Mustang. Check out the mix below and some tracks from his Farfalle EP.

It managed to come back from the dead half way through the show. Hopefully zombie computer cooperates for now. I'll have to make sure to get a new computer before the next show. Mix Monday: BeatauCue - Summer Best Of

Okay, it didn't take me long to mess up "Mix Monday." I know excuses don't matter, but I blame work. However, I have a mix to share. It's not technically a mix, but it's a great selection of tracks from French dj/producer duo BeatauCue. The playlist features three BeatauCue tracks and  four remixes of tracks from Yelle, Mika, Cicada, and Kylie Minogue. I swear, everything Kitsuné puts out is genius! BeatauCue released their third EP, Falcon Punch, on Kitsuné last month. Listen to the playlist and BeatauCue's EP below the jump.

Mix Monday: The Magician - Magic Tape Thirteen

Happy August! I can't believe the last month of the summer is here. It's kind of sad, but I'm excited for what the future holds. In honor of a new month and to inspire me to do more with my life, I'm starting what I'm calling "Mix Monday." In theory I'll post an awesome mix that I find or have found every Monday. Woo!

So to kick it all off, I decided to start with The Magician's Magic Tape Thirteen, which popped up a couple weeks ago. This man is a genius. I'm not sure what life is like in Brussels, but I'd like to hang with this guy. Who is The Magician really? Well, it's not important. Just recognize the sweet groovy disco jams that pump through your speakers. Anyway, you can read all about it when you "Like" him on facebook.

Hello internet world, here's the playlist from the show this week. I'm so sad I won't be around next week for the radio show, but I'll make it up somehow. Enjoy!

Rubber

The other day at work I was perusing the movie section and came across this horror movie, Rubber. Here's what the official synopsis reads:
RUBBER is the story of Robert, an inanimate tire that has been abandoned in the desert, and suddenly and inexplicably comes to life. As Robert roams the bleak landscape, he discovers that he possesses terrifying telepathic powers that give him the ability to destroy anything he wishes without having to move. At first content to prey on small desert creatures and various discarded objects, his attention soon turns to humans, especially a beautiful and mysterious woman who crosses his path. Leaving a swath of destruction across the desert landscape, Robert becomes a chaotic force to be reckoned with, and truly a movie villain for the ages. Directed by legendary electro musician Quentin Dupieux (Steak, Nonfilm), aka Mr. Oizo, RUBBER is a smart, funny and wholly original tribute to the cinematic concept of “no reason.
The tire on the cover and finding it horror section had me sold, but I was obligated after reading the summary. The film was done my Mr. Oizo. I watched the trailer for the movie when I got home and was super stoked to see Mr. Oizo and Justice's Gaspard Augé worked on the soundtrack. I'm not really sure how I didn't discover this before now. Maybe it solidifies me living under a rock. Luckily, the movie's free on Netflix, and I got a chance to watch it with friends last night. Now I'm up to speed. It was well worth the hour and twenty minutes. The movie was well done. I also grabbed the soundtrack from Amazon this morning for 6 bucks. The music for the movie was perfect. I'm happy with my decisions thus far in my Rubber journey. The preview and a couple of tracks follow for anyone interested.

I'm a huge fan of [legal] free music. Here's a good find.
